Nontraditional Occupations Can Be Your Future

Nontraditional Occupations (NTO) are careers that currently employ 25% or less of one gender.

For women, NTO careers offer higher wages than many occupations dominated by females. Engineers, architects, police officers, firefighters, electrical technicians, electronic technologists and construction trades are examples of high-wage female NTO careers. These careers are expected to show rapid growth during the next decade.

For men, NTO careers in the health sciences are often high-wage, fast-growth careers. Other male NTO career areas include service areas such as administrative assistant, barber/cosmetology and child care.

If you are interested in an NTO program, MATC offers support services designed to assist you from enrollment to graduation.

The NTO staff will help you:

  • Identify your short- and long-term goals
  • Target specific NTO careers
  • Enroll in an NTO academic program at MATC
  • Improve your math, reading or other academic skills, if necessary, through MATC's developmental courses
  • Access all support areas of the college, including financial aid, child care, tutoring, academic support centers, employment development and more
