Waiting Lists
Have you heard about “petitioning” to get into certain MATC programs? This process is being replaced by a new waiting list process outlined on this page.
When there are more students than seats available in an associate degree, technical diploma or certificate program with limited capacity, students are placed on a waiting list. When seats become available, students will be moved off the waiting list in order as long as they meet and maintain all academic preparedness requirements specific to their program. Academic preparedness requirements are the minimum requirements that students need to meet in order to get off the waiting list. Requirements can include minimum GPA, entrance exam score or completion of specific general education courses.
(For associate degree programs: these programs typically include general education courses, such as English and math, and students on a waiting list for these programs can take general education classes while on the waiting list.)
If you have been accepted to a program and placed on a waiting list, you are probably wondering how it all works. Here’s an overview of the waiting list process and what you can expect.
How It Works
- Once you opt in by acknowledging that a program has a waiting list and submit your application, you will be put on the waiting list.
- Your order on the list is determined by the date and time you applied and whether you’re a resident of the MATC District or another location. We give first priority to students who are residents of the MATC District (Milwaukee County, most of Ozaukee County and the Germantown School District in Washington County), then to residents of Wisconsin outside of the MATC District, and finally to others.
- Your application will be reviewed before each term (March 1 for Fall and October 1 for Spring) to determine if you have met all the program’s academic preparedness requirements.
- Once you have met the academic preparedness requirements, then you will be ready to register for technical courses specific to your program when a seat becomes available.
- Once a seat is available, you will be notified. Accept the offer and inform Admissions of your intent to enter the program by March 15 for Fall or October 15 for Spring.
- Register for technical courses specific to your program for the next term by April 30 for Fall semester or November 30 for Spring semester. If you don’t register, Admissions will remove you from the waiting list and the program.
- Let the MATC Admissions department know if you are not ready to enter the program; you will remain on the waiting list.
Communicating your intentions to the Admissions team and staying on top of deadlines are key to successfully navigating the waiting list process.
