Learn About Transferring Credits to MATC

College Courses

If you have taken courses at another college you may be eligible for credit at MATC. All General Studies courses taken at Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) are transferable to all other WTCS colleges. Certain high school courses in Wisconsin may be eligible for credit at MATC through the High School Articulation process.

Only classes completed from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution recognized by MATC where a student has received a "C" or better are transferable. Specific program requirements supersede this requirement. Eligible courses must match a specific course at MATC. The courses must be deemed identical by a lead faculty member or associate dean. There is no fee for transferring courses to MATC.

Frequently Asked Transfer Questions

How Do I Transfer Credits to MATC

What documentation do I need to provide to transfer my credits?
Students need to provide an official transcript to transfer credits to MATC from another college. Official transcripts are transcripts with the school's seal sent directly from the schools you previously attended.

How do I submit my transcripts?
If you have already earned college credits (not earned during your time in high school) that you want to transfer to MATC, request an official transcript from your previous college. The transcript must be received directly from the school or online request site. (Transcripts are not considered official if received from students.)
You can request your transcripts in either of these ways:

  • Electronically: Via Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) (choose apply@matc.edu as the recipient email)
  • U.S. mail: 700 W. State Street, ATTN: Admissions, Milwaukee WI 53233
  • In person any of the four campus Admission Centers: Do not open transcripts if you receive them at home. The transcript must remain in a sealed envelope.

Do I need to apply to MATC to have my transcript evaluated?
A CPLE Student Services Specialist can complete an unofficial review of your transcripts prior to admissions. For an unofficial evaluation, schedule an appointment or connect with CPLE here.

Technical studies courses may require the review of program instructors. An official evaluation occurs upon receipt of your MATC enrollment application, application fee, and official transcripts. MATC evaluates and transfers courses applicable to your program. Some programs have specific transfer policies and limits.

What do I need to do if I have a transcript from an international university?
Transcripts from international universities must be translated and evaluated by a recognized evaluating agency. MATC's policy requires that all foreign university transcripts be evaluated course by course. For further assistance, please contact our International Advising Office at 414-297-7324 or 414-297-6430.

Accreditation & Out-of-State College Credit Transfer

What if I attended an out-of-state or a WI private college?
Only classes taken from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution recognized by MATC where a student has received a "C" or better are transferable. Eligible courses must match a specific course at MATC and coursework must meet the same academic rigor at our college. The courses must be deemed identical by an Associate Dean. There is no fee for transferring courses to MATC.

How do I know if the college I attended is regionally accredited?
MATC accepts credits from regionally accredited institutions. To find out if your institution is regionally accredited, visit http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/search.aspx

Transfer Rules

What grade must I achieve to transfer college credits?
College transfer credits must have a minimum grade of C or better. Specific program requirements supersede this requirement.

Do college transfer credits affect my MATC GPA?
No, transfer credits are not calculated in your MATC GPA; however, they are counted in the financial 150% rule.

Do I need to take the Accuplacer (admissions) test if I have college credits or a degree?
MATC does not require any placement testing for Admission purposes.

Once I transfer in my courses, do I need to take a certain number of courses at MATC to graduate?
Yes, the number of transfer credits cannot exceed 75% of the required technical college credits. Twenty-five percent of your technical credits must be earned at MATC. Your program plan will tell you how many credits you must complete at MATC.

My Transfer Credits

How will I know if my credits transferred?
Transfer credits are entered on the student's program plan as a TE (Transfer Equivalency). You can find your program plan on SelfService. Your unofficial transcript will show your transfer credits and you will receive an email from CPLE regarding the status.

How long does it take to see my transfer credits on my program plan?
Once Admissions processes your transcripts, your transcript will be sent to the CPLE office for evaluation. Once evaluated, you will receive an email to view any changes. Please allow two to four weeks to see your transfer results; during peak times, the wait time may be longer.

Why don't some credits transfer to my program?
Typically, we only transfer in courses that are applicable to your program of study. You may have other credits that may transfer to MATC; however, they may not apply as part of the requirements for your degree. If you change programs, you will need to contact a Transfer Specialist to request additional courses to be transferred.
