Golden Anniversary

The Mequon and Oak Creek campuses celebrate 50 years of transforming lives

50 years of MATC

IN 1976 Summerfest tickets cost $2.50, the Great Ice Storm put Wisconsin in a deep freeze, and the Mequon and Oak Creek campuses opened their doors to students. To celebrate this milestone birthday, Transformations designer Sarah Koch worked with librarian and archivist Jeff Beder to create this look back at the early days of both MATC campuses.

A TECHNICAL COLLEGE EDUCATION

a technical college education A technical college education is in demand in the 1970s, and MATC quickly recognizes the need to expand. Local vocational schools in Cudahy, South Milwaukee and Port Washington are consolidated and absorbed by MATC. The college chooses two sites for its new regional campuses: one on South Howell Avenue in Oak Creek and another on Highland Road in Mequon. Channel 4 covers the 1974 ground breaking of Oak Creek Campus, then known as the South Campus. The ground breaking for the Mequon Campus, then known as North Campus, follows in 1975.

Mequon Campus

Two guys shoveling From the moment MATC President George A. Parkin  put a shovel in the ground, construction
of the Mequon Campus took off. Mequon quickly became known for an automotive program that worked with local car dealers and horticulture programs that cultivated the next generation of arborists and landscapers. Horticulture students got hands-on experience tending plants in the
greenhouses and getting behind the wheel of a tractor. The plant sale remains a community favorite. Today, Mequon Campus offers programs in healthcare, electrical power distribution, health and wellness, and aesthetics.

Oak Creek Campus

People creating Engines The campus becomes a center for internships, aviation, industrial programs and protective services. These archival photos show steamfitting students learning theory in the classroom, while students in diesel engines repair a motor. The campus’s setting makes it an ideal home for the college’s baseball team. The community celebrates the ground breaking.
