MAKIN' CAKE MIXES DISCUSSION ON RACE AND WEALTH DISPARITY

MAKIN' CAKE STORYTELLING STAGE PRODUCTION

Dasha Kelly Hamilton, MATC’s social justice chair and the poet laureate for the state of Wisconsin, hosted “Makin’ Cake,” on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 in Cooley Auditorium at MATC’s Downtown Milwaukee Campus. “Makin’ Cake” is a stage production that mixes storytelling, multimedia projection and live bakers to illustrate the history of cake and chronicle wealth disparity and institutional racism in America. Makin’ Cake is a short story about America’s sweet tooth for continuing to stir the bowl of racist discussion and behaviors. After the curtain call, the audience is invited to eat cupcakes and converse about race and equity in America. The production featured red velvet and devil’s food cake prepared on stage with Joynear Duncan, a third-semester student, who served as the guest baker.
