MILWAUKEE – The creativity, originality and artistic talent of Milwaukee Area Technical College students, instructors and community members will be on display later this month when the college participates in Gallery Night MKE.
For the second year in a row, MATC will be among 30 venues featured in Galley Night MKE, billed as Milwaukee’s original gallery hop event.
On Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23, visitors can view and purchase paintings, sculpture, photography and drawings by local artists at various locations in downtown Milwaukee, the Historic Third Ward, East Town, Walker’s Point and the Menomonee River Valley.
MATC will showcase the work of 2020-21 photography program graduates in the First Floor Student Gallery in Room M175 of the Main Building, 1015 North Sixth Street.
The gallery will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 22, and from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23.
“This is a way to promote MATC in the community and really increase awareness of what our students can accomplish,” said John Glembin, a photography instructor at MATC for 17 years.
Graduates being featured are Lavella Green, Meg Huenink, Miranda Johnsen, Trevor Keay, Claire Kotlowski, Isabella Oryszczyn, Shane Potter, Katie Synold, Xai Theo and Quentin Ware-Bey.
Each student provided about three pieces that were printed, framed and installed in the gallery for the event, Glembin said.
On the second floor of the Main Building, the MATC Community Art Committee is displaying some of the works unveiled last October and used to beautify MATC’s Downtown Milwaukee Campus, which had recently been renovated. Pieces from 13 artists were installed across the campus in 2021.
The artworks on display for the gallery night event are by Kevin Boatright, Byada, Rochelle Weiner Carr, Enrique Del Aguila, Melissa Dorn, Lennis Mathews, Julia Scheckel and Libby Sutton.
Galley Night MKE has been held quarterly for about 30 years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the nights were held virtually and others canceled.
