Milwaukee Area Technical College, the South Suburban Chamber of Commerce, local manufacturers as well as health care companies and providers are joining forces to raise middle and high school students’ awareness about careers and opportunities in high-demand manufacturing and health care fields. Dubbed “Heavy Metal and Rockin’ Health Careers,” the event will be held from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at MATC’s Oak Creek Campus, 6665 S. Howell Ave.
Bradley Tech, Cudahy, Franklin, MacDowell Montessori, St. Augustine, St. Thomas More and South Milwaukee high schools, as well as Whitnall Middle School, will bring approximately 300 students to tour MATC classrooms and labs and to interact with industry professionals. Activities will be held in the Energy Conservation and Advanced Manufacturing (ECAM) Center and in the A Building.
Students will meet MATC instructors and students and talk with manufacturers and health care representatives. Some hands-on experiences will include welding, 3D modeling, robotics simulation activities and health simulators. Students will explore MATC programs including certified nursing assistant, chemical technician, dental technician, dietetic technology, medical assistant, tool and die, truck driving and welding, as well as the MATC’s Makerspace.
Participating companies and institutions include Advocate Aurora Health; Bell Ambulance; Briggs & Stratton Corporation; Caterpillar; Center for Healthcare Careers of SE Wisconsin (Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and Ascension); GACC Midwest; ICATT (apprenticeship program); Krones, Inc.; and Nordco, Inc. During the second half of the event, students will visit Ascension, Briggs & Stratton Corporation, Caterpillar, Harley-Davidson and Krones, Inc. as a part of the “lunch and learn” portion of the program.
