GED HSED Graduation

The knowledge we’ve gained, the experiences we’ve encountered and the personal growth we’ve achieved here have laid a foundation for our futures. We’ve been given the tools to make a meaningful impact on the world.

Joshua Jones MATC Spring 2025 HSED Graduate

Deliriously happy, somewhat relieved and eternally grateful, Joshua Jones reached a finish line on Wednesday, May 28.

He was among 282 Milwaukee Area Technical College students who earned General Educational Development (GED) certificates, High School Equivalency Diplomas (HSED) and Emerging Scholars diplomas at a boisterous, ebullient graduation ceremony at MATC’s Cooley Auditorium.

While the graduates celebrated completion, Jones, who served as student speaker at the event, urged them to look forward and to continue improving their lives.

“Today is not just an ending,” Jones told the crowd. “It’s a beginning fueled by gratitude for the past and hope for the future.

“The knowledge we’ve gained, the experiences we’ve encountered and the personal growth we’ve achieved here have laid a foundation for our futures,” Jones said. “We’ve been given the tools to make a meaningful impact on the world.”

The ceremony recognized students who graduated from the MATC Emerging Scholars Program and the college’s community-based educational partners: Literacy Services of Wisconsin, UMOS Inc. and YWCA Southeast Wisconsin.

“This event is so joyous and so meaningful,” said Clavon Byrd, Ph.D., the college’s associate dean of community education. “Graduation is where it’s at.”

Jones praised MATC instructors and staff for their work in the GED and HSED programs. “You’ve challenged us, inspired us and patiently guided us through study sessions and moments of doubt,” he said. “Your dedication has been unwavering, and the lessons you’ve imparted extend far beyond the pages of any textbook.”,

Keynote speaker Lacreshia Whiters lauded the graduates for their commitment to earning their certificates and diplomas, and encouraged them to keep moving forward.

“You are capable of overcoming any obstacle. You are capable of greatness,” Whiters said. “You are good enough. Use this as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Step outside your comfort zone — that’s when the magic happens.”

That magic happened for Whiters. She was a teenage mother who earned her high school diploma and then a bachelor’s degree from Alverno College. Today, she works in human resources, is a licensed real estate agent and has owned several businesses.

“I faced setbacks, doubts and had people tell me I couldn’t do it,” Whiters said. “I blocked out that noise and kept pushing. I kept believing in myself.”

And MATC is prepared to help anyone who believes in themselves, wants to further their education and wants to transform their lives, said MATC President Dr. Anthony Cruz.

“We stand ready to partner with you once again when you are ready,” Dr. Cruz told the graduates. “We will support you and cheer you on when you cross other stages on your way to educational success.”
