Doing taxes can be difficult and daunting, so Milwaukee Area Technical College is here to help.

MATC students, faculty and community members with a family income of $66,000 or less can have their federal and state income tax returns and Homestead credit forms prepared, processed and electronically filed free of charge by MATC accounting students and other volunteers.

The virtual, online service is provided in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which helps low- to moderate-income individuals, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English speakers (languages include Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Karenni, Burmese, French, Lingala) file their taxes each year.

This year MATC has partnered with Get Your Refund, a national, nonprofit  electronic filing service, to help students and community members properly complete their federal income tax returns.

Interested taxpayers can simply go online and access MATC’s unique Get Your Refund website at https://getyourrefund.org/matc and upload the appropriate documentation:

  • Intake/Interview & Quality Review Sheet - IRS Form 13614-C https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f13614c.pdf
  • Copy of the prior year’s federal and state returns

Students in MATC’s Applied Individual Income Tax class (Accounting 155) and other trained volunteers will review the documents, process the information and file the appropriate return.

For MATC students and community members who do not have easy access to technology, volunteers will accept tax documentation dropped off in person on a limited basis at MATC’s Downtown Milwaukee Campus, 700 W. State St.; and the Oak Creek Campus, 6665 S. Howell Ave.

Interested taxpayers can drop off their documentation and the MATC accounting students will complete the returns within a week. Taxpayers will need to return and pick up their finished tax returns.
