The Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) and Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) honored the Al Hurvis/ADAMM Education Foundation on Tuesday evening. The Foundation helps youth to succeed in their academic and professional lives by providing scholarships, mentoring and internships. The WTCS Futuremaker Partner award recognizes the unique, dynamic partnerships between Wisconsin's technical colleges and their employer partners.
“These folks and the work they are doing with MATC truly embody the spirit of the Futuremaker Partner award,” said WTCS Board President S. Mark Tyler, who is the founder and President of Woodville-based OEM Fabricators. “At a time when we need to be encouraging everyone’s full engagement in the workforce, that is precisely the Foundation’s focus.”
The Foundation's partnership with MATC engages the college and its students in several ways, including:
- contributing to curriculum development for the college's automotive program, through its affiliation with ADAMM, the six county auto dealers trade and training association;
- funding student scholarships on an annual basis, including the MATC Promise and Peak Scholar programs;
- providing financial support for the future Al Hurvis PEAK Transportation Center; and
- leading the investment in the new MATC RevUp Program, which was designed to improve student engagement, retention and completion by providing support services for current students, as well as outreach and career exploration opportunities for middle and high school students, particularly disadvantaged youth, who may be interested in transportation careers.
As a reliable partner in the development and promotion of hands-on career awareness and exploration, the Foundation is also helping to strengthen MATC's relationship with the Medical College of Wisconsin. That unique partnership led to a training program for laboratory techs and MATC student participation in "500 Stars," a strategic initiative to increase diversity in the translational science workforce.
"Together, we have a lot of lives to change," said Foundation co-founder Tom Hurvis. "We're just at the beginning, so we need to think big."

"MATC's new RevUp program, an outgrowth of this partnership, will connect students beginning in middle school with a college pathway to in-demand transportation careers. The Foundation demonstrates a commitment to our mission and students through program support, scholarships, and in helping launch our new men's and women's tennis teams," Martin said.
