At its annual Gridiron and Awards Dinner on May 12, the Milwaukee Press Club presented Milwaukee PBS’ newest local series, “10thirtysix,’ with its top honor – the Gold Award for Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism in the category of Best News or Sports Program. “10thirtysix” also won a Silver Award for Best Writing in a Video Story.
Two other Milwaukee PBS programs took home awards as well. “The Arts Page” was recognized with a Silver Award for Best Documentary, and “Outdoor Wisconsin” received a Bronze Award for Best Long Form Feature Story.
“10thirtysix” premiered in November 2016, with a goal to offer southeastern Wisconsin a new platform and a new perspective. Titled after Milwaukee PBS' two major channels, this monthly news magazine is hosted by veteran newswoman Portia Young and highlights an eclectic mix of interesting topics and people from throughout the viewing area. Each 30-minute episode features in-depth segments designed to give viewers greater knowledge about our communities. “10thirtysix” airs every third Friday of each month on Milwaukee PBS 10. “Milwaukee PBS is honored by the Milwaukee Press Club's recognition of “10thirtysix’ as the Best News or Sports program,” said Bohdan Zachary, general manager of Milwaukee PBS. “Since the launch of our news magazine series last fall, we have focused on the issues that reflect the interests and needs of the communities we serve in southeast Wisconsin. This award bolsters our intent to keep delivering on the promise and the mission of public television.”
“10thirtysix” also received a Silver Award for Best Writing in a Video Story. Dan Jones received the award for his work on a segment titled “Who Wants to be a Police Officer These Days?"
Local weekly series “The Arts Page” was honored with the Silver Award for Best Documentary for its special titled “Tour de Force,” which featured a unique collaboration between the Milwaukee Ballet Company and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Hosted by Sandy Maxx, each regularly-formatted episode features several segments on the arts which profile a variety of artists from Milwaukee and the U.S. The Milwaukee PBS team who brought “Tour de Force” to air includes: Tiff Pua, producer; and Jeff Janca, Jeff Moorbeck, Chris Michalski and Justin Migliano, co-producers,
“Outdoor Wisconsin” also was recognized with a Bronze Award in the category of Best Long Form Feature Story, for its special episode that featured the inspiring story of an 8-year-old competitive skier who has overcome a personal challenge to compete. Now in its 33rd season, “Outdoor Wisconsin” is Milwaukee PBS' longest-running program. The program is hosted by Dan Small. The “Outdoor Wisconsin” team is: Maryann Lazarski, supervising producer; Emmeline Fink, reporter/producer; and Justin Migliano and Jeff Moorbeck, producers.
