Careers in Energy Week Event Held Oct. 18 at Mequon Campus
Oct. 19, 2016
The Wisconsin Energy Workforce Consortium held an event featuring line mechanic climbing activities by students and a ceremony featuring a proclamation from Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to celebrate “Careers in Energy Week” at Milwaukee Area Technical College’s Mequon Campus Oct. 18.
The focus of the event was to highlight the many family-supporting careers available in the field of energy, the work of the Wisconsin Energy Consortium and the experiences and opportunities available to graduates of MATC’s electrical power distribution/line mechanic technical diploma program.
Students from that program helped visiting high school students get harnessed and climb utility poles and climb in a bucket truck.
Concurrently, there was a program featuring Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Secretary Raymond Allen who presented a “Careers in Energy” proclamation from Gov. Walker. Other speakers included Dr. Wilma Bonaparte, vice president of MATC’s Mequon Campus; Dorothy Walker, interim dean of MATC’s School of Technical and Applied Sciences; current line mechanic student Jalen Morris; program graduate Nick Trudell, who is now a line mechanic apprentice at We Energies: and Jim Lorenz, director of electric construction and operations at Madison Gas and Electric Company. Lorenz represented the Wisconsin Energy Workforce Consortium, which is led by five energy companies with service areas in Wisconsin: Wisconsin Public Service, We Energies, Alliant Energy, Xcel Energy and Madison Gas and Electric.
