Overview — Designed specifically for the general hospitality industry, this program emphasizes the education, experience and skill development needed for mid-management/supervisory levels of employment in the hotel/motel industry.

Although this is a day program, selected courses are scheduled for evenings and weekends on a rotating basis; accelerated and online options are offered for some courses. You will be required to complete an internship in the course HOTEL-130 Internship in Hotel/Hospitality Management.

Skills and aptitudes necessary for success in the program include a service orientation, willingness to learn, and stamina to work long hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.


Dual Degree Option — Add specified courses to this program to earn associate degrees in both Meeting and Event Management and Hotel/Hospitality Management. See your program advisor for details.


Career Pathway — You can earn the Foundations of Lodging and Hospitality Management technical diploma on your way to completing this associate degree. Contact an MATC advisor for information.


Career Outlook — Program graduates are prepared for employment in one of the fastest growing segments of the nation's economy. Due to a shortage of qualified hospitality professionals, graduates with energy, training and experience have an opportunity to make a difference. 


Some job opportunities include hotel/motel manager, lodge manager, country club manager, meeting and convention planner, security director, conference manager, purchasing agent, credit manager, resident manager, sales manager, front office manager, executive housekeeper, and food and beverage controller.
 


Program Learning Outcomes — Employers will expect graduates to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge:

  • Front desk skills including the efficient operation of telephone, switchboard, cash register, calculator and reservation computer
  • Housekeeping staff management capability
  • Overall food and beverage management skills
  • Sales, marketing and product merchandising skills
  • General knowledge of building operations; energy efficiency; and maintenance of electrical, heating, and air conditioning systems
  • Fundamentals of hotel/motel accounting, financial statements, auditing and managerial financing


Preparation for Admission — The following are required for admission to the program:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Demonstration of proficiency in basic skills through a course placement assessment

In addition, students are to be actively involved in the hospitality industry on a part-time basis while attending MATC. 


Future Opportunities — If you are interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree upon completion of the program, check with a program advisor, and the institution you plan to attend regarding the transfer of MATC credits.
