MATC Offers New Web Designer Diploma Program

MILWAUKEE (Aug. 8, 2008) - Beginning this fall, Milwaukee Area Technical College will offer a web designer diploma program at the Downtown Milwaukee and Oak Creek campuses through its Business Division. The Wisconsin Technical College System approved the program in 2007 and about 20 students are expected to begin program courses this fall. MATC will be the first of the 16-member WTCS to offer a web designer diploma. 

Students will complete 32 credits in a variety of courses that combine the strengths of web design, web development and eCommerce marketing. Many required courses will be offered online. Students will gain applied skills in upcoming technologies, design tools, marketing principles and web development languages. The technical diploma is aimed at focusing skills, maintaining occupational currency, and preparing for the future in this ever-changing technology.

“This diploma allows students to concentrate on the components of web design and to really develop their skill set,” said MATC eCommerce/Web Administration instructor Jonathan Meersman.

An MATC survey of potential employers in the Milwaukee area indicated that 57% have difficulty finding qualified web designers for employment and 79% expect to hire full-time web designers in the next four years.
 
“Web design continues to evolve at an extremely rapid pace,” Meersman said. “Industry leaders are involved in helping shape our curriculum, which prepares students for their future employment.”
