MILWAUKEE (Feb. 9, 2012) – Students from Milwaukee Area Technical College's interior design associate degree program won first place in the Benjamin Moore Interior Design Contest at the Milwaukee NARI Home Improvement Show, Feb. 9-12, at the Wisconsin Exposition Center at State Fair Park. Show attendees voted for their favorite room design or college. MATC earned a $1,000 award. MATC has captured the top honor in four of the last six years. Other participating institutions included Gateway Technical College, Mount Mary and Waukesha Technical College.
Students were given a 12' x 12' white space and had to design dining room in a Global Design Style. Students were responsible for defining and interpreting that style, creating a design and space plan, selecting accessories, furniture, materials and finishes, implementing the design, and procuring the materials without the assistance of professional contractors.
"The students' effort was impressive, considering much of the work occurred over the semester break," said MATC interior design instructor Mary Walgren. "They had 24 hours for the installation, which included painting the walls, laying the floors, building a faux ceiling and installing lighting. The students worked extremely hard and are eager for local residents to see their results."
