MATC Adds Several New Academic Programs for 2011-12
Milwaukee Area Technical College has announced that four new associate degree programs, two technical diploma programs and three certificate programs will be available in the Fall 2011 semester. The list of new programs includes:
Associate Degrees Associate in Arts – Liberal Arts Transfer with Accelerated Online Option Biotechnology Track of Associate in Science Chemical Technology Track of Associate in Science Human Resources
Technical Diplomas Culinary Assistant Optician - Vision Care Certificates Dietary Manager Interior Design - Kitchen and Bath Design Interior Design Sales
The Associate in Arts degree is offered entirely online in an accelerated format. Students can complete the first two academic years of a bachelor’s degree in one year of full-time study. Upon completion of degree requirements, students will be prepared to transfer to a four-year college or university. Courses are offered in eight-week sessions. Five sessions (two in the fall and spring semesters, one in the summer term) and 11 elective credits are the degree requirements. The Associate in Arts degree program emphasizes the humanities and social sciences, training students to think critically and creatively. Students are strongly advised to consult with the four-year college or university they plan to attend for specific transfer and bachelor’s degree requirements.

The Associate in Science degree with Biotechnology emphasis provides the first two years of bachelor’s degree credit courses that will transfer to a four-year college or university. Courses emphasize biology, microbiology and genetics. Summer research/internship opportunities are available.

The Associate in Science degree with Chemical Technology emphasis provides the first two years of bachelor’s degree credit courses that will transfer to a four-year college or university. Courses emphasize chemistry and prepare students to work in an industrial chemistry lab. Summer research/internship opportunities are available.

The Human Resources associate degree has been added as career opportunities make it one of the fastest-growing fields. New standards in numerous employment areas have resulted in an anticipated 22% jump in employment opportunities, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The program will address how effective human resource strategies and standards help achieve organizations’ overall goals and objectives. The program covers employee recruitment and selection, training and development, employee and labor relations, and compensation and benefits. Successful completion of the degree will prepare students for the following careers: affirmative action and EEO specialist, benefits specialist, compensation specialist, and recruitment specialist.

The Culinary Assistant technical diploma prepares students for careers in the restaurant, hotel and institutional food service industry. This program is accredited by the American Culinary Federation Educational Institute Accrediting Commission.

The Optician-Vision Care technical diploma program prepares students to conduct eye examinations and educate patients about eyewear and contact lenses. Students put their skills into practice by working in the on-campus eyewear shop. Employment opportunities are expected to increase as the population ages and the demand for corrective lenses grows. The program can be completed in two semesters if students attend on a full-time basis. Students who earn the technical diploma can pursue careers as dispensing opticians or ophthalmic laboratory technicians.

The Dietary Manager program will be offered at the West Allis Campus and is designed for students who are in the Dietetic Technician associate degree program and/or sitting for the Dietary Managers Association Certified Dietary Manager examination.

The Interior Design – Kitchen and Bath Design certificate will offer students a streamlined approach to the kitchen and bath industry. These courses can be applied toward an associate degree in interior design at MATC.
