MATC Hosted Film Screening/Discussion with Indian Filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan
MILWAUKEE (March 24, 2011) – A screening of the film “Four Women” and a discussion with its creator, internationally known Indian filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, was March 22 in the Student Center at Milwaukee Area Technical College’s Downtown Milwaukee Campus.
The 90-minute film, originally titled “Naalu Pennungal,” was shown after a brief introduction. Following the screening, Gopalakrishnan discussed his film and answered questions for about 40 minutes. A reception followed.
Based on short stories by prolific Indian author Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai, the film is composed of vignettes about four women struggling with Indian societal norms. The women come from different strata of society and their stories cover different time spans in the mid-20th century. Just before its screening at MATC, “Four Women” was shown at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as part of “Maximum INDIA,” a celebration of India’s many cultures.
Gopalakrishnan has directed and produced 10 feature films and 30 documentaries, as well as writing three books on cinema.
The presentation was sponsored by MATC’s Liberal Arts and Sciences Division and the Grassroots Committee. The Grassroots Series is intended to present events focused on issues in liberal arts and sciences that help students and the community connect issues studied in classrooms with the world in which we live our everyday lives.
