MATC Environmental Health and Water Quality Technology Students Participated in National, International Events
MILWAUKEE - The Environmental Health and Water Quality Technology students recently volunteered their time in a nationwide Adopt-a-Beach program. The students adopted South Shore Beach at 2900 South Shore Dr. in Bay View. They cleaned up litter on the beach and water, sampled for E. coli, compiled a comprehensive report and entered data into the Alliance for the Great Lakes Adopt-a-Beach database that is used by local and state health departments.
Along with the Adopt-a-Beach program, students conducted water sampling and analysis to increase the awareness of World Water Monitoring Day on Sept. 18. World Water Monitoring Day is celebrated to raise awareness about water quality and quantity.
"We are so fortunate to have Lake Michigan in our backyard," said instructor Kathy Bates. "People in other areas of the United States and in other countries suffer the consequences of drinking water that contains diseases and other contaminants."
