Culinary Arts Students Take Second in Reinhart Competition
MILWAUKEE (April 1, 2011) – Four Milwaukee Area Technical College culinary arts associate degree students who are enrolled in an MATC “Culinary Competition” course took second place in the Reinhart Foodservic Foodshow (sic) competition at Potawatomi Bingo Casino March 29. The students participated in a “mystery box” contest, which involved receiving a box of ingredients and having two hours to create a menu and cook an appetizer and entrée for six people with its contents.
The team included Adam Struebing, Alex Beronja, Anthony Scardina and Evan Greenhalgh. They made seared scallops with basil puree and infused olive oil for their appetizer. Their entrée was a duo of seared sea bass and poached halibut with pickled kumquats and toasted quinoa. Culinary arts instructor James Udulutch teaches the “Culinary Competition” class and coached the students. Classmates Patrick Driscoll, Shajhed Morales, Jeanette Leicht, Paul Culp, James Larsen and Eric Schuster competed along with the others in a Wisconsin Restaurant Show contest earlier in March.
Students from Blackhawk Technical College took first place and Waukesha County Technical College students finished third. The contest was sponsored by Reinhart Food Service.
The “Culinary Competition” class is taught each semester as an independent study course. Spots in the class are competitive.
