Overview — Office Technology Assistant is a two-semester technical diploma program that prepares graduates for entry-level employment in today’s fast-paced business environment. Student skills are developed in business English; professional business behavior and growth; office procedures; word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation graphics; introductory Internet; and basic office accounting. Courses can be applied toward the completion of the Administrative Assistant, Medical Administrative Specialist, or Legal Administrative Professional associate degrees. Select courses are available at the West Allis Campus.
Career Outlook — All organizations, including government, service firms, and commercial and industrial companies, require individuals who possess these skills. Job requests far outnumber graduates. Job titles associated with the position include office support, office assistant, word processing specialist, clerk typist, file clerk, receptionist, clerical assistant and clerical support.
Program Learning Outcomes — Employers will expect you as a graduate of this program to:
- Demonstrate administrative and organizational skills, an ability to use reference manuals, effective oral and written communication skills, the the ability to work as a team member.
- Present a professional attitude, appearance, and behavior.
- Demonstrate excellent keyboarding skills.
- Demonstrate proficiency in formatting and producing business documents.
- Demonstrate proficiency in spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Keyboard using a variety of computer software packages.
- Perform Internet research.
- Use effectively a business telephone, fax and photocopier.
- Use manual and electronic filing methods as well as information management procedures.
Preparation for Admission — The following are required for admission to the program:
- A high school diploma or GED
- Demonstration of proficiency in basic skills through a course placement assessment
