There are two types of course cartridges:
- Protected - Requires a student access code that is bundled with a textbook. These are downloaded directly from Blackboard, and you must start with a fresh copy each semester; thereby, losing any customizations that you have made.
- Non-Protected - Does not require a student access code and can be copied from semester to semester; thereby, saving your customizations. (i.e., McGraw-Hill and Course Technology; Allen & Bacon/Longman)
If using a cartridge, contact your textbook representative for details. The most common arrangement is to bundle a Blackboard User Guide with the textbook and give it a new ISBN number. Some publishers charge additional for textbooks bundled with Blackboard. You will need the approval of your department's associate dean to use a course cartridge for a course.
