Commencement Brings Profound, Lasting Influence
Commencement ceremonies are powerful reminders that our work brings about positive and lasting change in the lives of our graduates and their families.

Our May 21 commencement at the U.S. Cellular Arena recognized 1,400 associate degree, technical diploma, apprentice and Adult High School graduates. Two weeks later, we also celebrated the accomplishments of 1,000 GED and HSED graduates at the Milwaukee Theatre.

I want to personally thank Governor Jim Doyle for his inspirational remarks as our commencement speaker. "I love MATC," the governor told the graduates and the thousands of family members and friends gathered. He said MATC's doors are open to all who are willing to work hard and that MATC is "absolutely critical to Wisconsin."

Three outstanding students were recognized at the ceremony:
Anne Hunt, Interior Design associate degree graduate
Kathleen Smith, Medical Assistant technical diploma graduate
Frances Brown, Adult High School graduate

I was honored to confer the degrees and diplomas at my first MATC commencement ceremony. Looking from the stage podium to an arena filled with overjoyed graduates and their loved ones was a heartfelt moment that I will carry with me. Clearly, an MATC education changes lives.

The June 3 GED/HSED commencement celebration marked its 25th anniversary. In recognition of the event, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett proclaimed June 3, 2010 "Adult Education Day," recognizing MATC and our Community-Based Organization partners through an official mayoral proclamation.

Tony Evers, state superintendent of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, conferred the degrees. Shannon Sharp, who earned her GED at the Next Door Foundation, Inc., was the student speaker.

I personally encouraged the GED and HSED graduates to transition to MATC college programs as an important next step in their academic success.

Enjoy the rest of the summer. I look forward to seeing you again at Coordination Day, August 24.

Michael L. Burke, Ph.D.
President

2009 Grads Succeed in Difficult Economy
Despite landing in one of the worst job markets in decades, MATC's 2009 graduates fared very well. The college's newly released Graduate Report (see http://matc.edu/documents/Grad_Report2009.pdf) is a detailed survey of 62% (1,460) of the December 2008 and May 2009 associate degree and technical diploma graduates. Eight of every 10 associate degree graduates and seven of 10 technical diploma alumni were employed within six months of graduation. The publication also provides the graduates' self-reported salaries. The average starting salary of associate degree graduates is $33,070. For technical diploma graduates, the starting salary is $28,160. The vast majority were employed in their fields of study. This is a remarkable accomplishment in such difficult economic times and a testament to the value of an MATC education. In addition to the online link provided above, printed copies of the report are available through internal requisition from Printing Services at the Downtown Milwaukee Campus.

Board Resolution Supports Boycott of Arizona Vendors and Travel
The MATC District Board passed a resolution at its May 25 meeting in response to the newly signed Arizona immigration law (SB1070). Through the resolution, MATC will not purchase goods or services from companies headquartered in Arizona and will not send employees to conferences or meetings held in Arizona. The board's resolution also calls for MATC to review existing goods and services contracts with Arizona-based companies and to discontinue those contracts consistent with the contract terms. Arizona's law, which went into effect April 23, allows police broad power to detain anyone they suspect of being in the country illegally and charge immigrants with a state crime for not carrying immigration documents. The board resolution notes that the law potentially puts MATC students and employees traveling to Arizona at risk.
