Dear MATC Community:

We are all just learning of the verdict against Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd. Injustice is a matter of life and death for Black individuals and people of color in this country and this case is a specific, graphic reminder of that.

At the same time, George Floyd’s death has become a symbol of broader racial injustice. We reaffirm our commitment to racial equity and continue to stand in solidarity with Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American, Asian American Pacific Islander and other marginalized groups in our community who are hurting in the wake of not only this case but also so many others just in the last year.  As I shared last year, we cannot deny the role institutionalized racism plays throughout our society.

MATC remains committed to both racial justice and racial equity. We will continue to listen to and work with students and employees to create a safe, welcoming, equitable and anti-racist college built on the foundation of MATC’s values of inclusion, integrity and respect. We know we have more work to do and we continue to recognize, listen to, understand and address the experiences of members of our community.

I know the last few weeks have been heavy and full of turmoil. For those in our MATC community seeking a safe space to discuss and reflect, sessions will be available for students and employees. Watch for notice of these times very soon. Students also can reach out to the Student Resource Center for support and employees can contact the Employee Assistance Program

We continue to support people’s right to peacefully protest and as always, the college will monitor any demonstrations and keep the college community informed of any traffic or other safety impacts as necessary. The college is prepared to shift to 100% virtual classes and services if necessary.

Thank you for walking together as a college on the journey toward racial equity.

Sincerely,

Vicki J. Martin, Ph.D.
