Academic Advising is the process through which faculty help program students clarify and achieve academic and career goals, acquire relevant information about campus resources and services and make academic decisions consistent with interests, goals, abilities, degree, and institutional requirements.  This process includes preparing for registration, identifying academic problems, referring to appropriate academic support services and campus resources, and offering academic, education and career mentoring.

Faculty Advisors are among the best campus resources for program information and insights because they are instructors in your program and have worked professionally in your field of study.  Faculty Advisors can help you plan your course of study so you can make the best possible academic and career decisions, take courses in correct sequence to meet graduation requirements, and develop and implement plans to reach your educational and career goals.

Faculty advisors can also help you make career connections in your field of study and may also provide employment recommendations.

Your Program Counselor will assist you in planning for your first semester at MATC.  After this planning session you will be assigned a faculty advisor who will assist you throughout your enrollment at MATC.

Your advisor's name is listed on your Academic Profile and your Program Plan.  You can find these items on INFOnline. Every semester verify that your Academic Profile is accurate and update if necessary.  If you have not yet started your program you will not yet have an advisor assigned.  An advisor will be assigned by midterm of your first semester at MATC.

Students who fail to meet Standards for Academic Success and are placed on Academic Probation will be assigned a Program Counselor as their advisor.

If your Program Plan does not list an advisor, if you wish to change advisors, or if the advisor listed is incorrect because you have changed programs, contact the division office for your program .

Each semester MATC provides a Priority Registration period for continuing Program students.  To emphasize the importance of advising, MATC schedules "Advising Weeks" just before Priority Registration.  Minimally, you should plan on meeting with your advisor during Advising Weeks to plan your course of study for the next semester.

Some advisors may take classroom time to discuss program planning and registration.  Watch for classroom announcements and postings.  Some programs or divisions may have special advising activities, so check your MATC provided Student e-mail to remain up to date.  Some advisors expect you to request advising, so do not hesitate to contact them.

If you are having a problem or have a question, waiting until Priority Registration to get help may be too late!  You may contact your Faculty Advisor any time during the semester.
