Financial Aid

The MATC Federal School Code is 003866

The MATC Financial Aid office assists students by awarding financial aid to help pay education-related expenses. Financial aid is available from federal, state, and private resources. There are four primary types of financial aid programs: grants, scholarships, loans and federal work-study.

  • Grants and scholarships are free money you will not have to pay back.
  • Loans are money you will have to pay back.
  • Federal work-study is money you will not have to pay back. You earn federal work-study money by working a job approved through the MATC JOBshop. You can use this earned money to help pay for your education-related expenses.

How to Apply

If you would like to receive financial aid, you will need to apply for financial aid at least 12 weeks before the start of the semester you are planning to attend. Otherwise, you may miss out on receiving available grant money. We highly recommend that you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at least 12 weeks prior to the semester starting to ensure that your financial aid is processed before classes start.

To apply for financial aid, you will need to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You will need to sign your FAFSA  online with your pin number.  If you are a dependent student, you and a parent will need to sign the FAFSA online with a pin number.  Students and parents may obtain a pin number at www.pin.ed.gov.  Apply for financial aid at least six months before you expect to enroll. The MATC Federal School Code is 003866.

Get organized. To simplify filling out the FAFSA, gather the following documents and other information and have them with you when you are completing your FAFSA:

  • Federal Tax Return 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ
  • W-2's from each job worked in 2006

Unemployment, Social Security, Wisconsin Works W2, and any other documentation of income you received in 2006

If you are a dependent student (under the age of 24, single, no dependents, and you are not a veteran) you will also need your parents' 2006 Federal Tax Returns and income information for 2006.

Fill out the FAFSA. It has seven steps that ask about you (and your parents if you are a dependent student), your school plans, income and asset information, and more.

After you apply for Federal Student Financial Aid, you may be selected for verification by the Department of Education. Verification is a request to review your FAFSA information. Approximately 30% of students who apply for financial aid are randomly selected for verification. If you have been selected, you must complete an Independent Verification Form or a Dependent Verification Form and submit the required documents listed on the form to the Financial Aid Office.  You can access these forms here.

Important Information to Remember

You will not receive financial aid from MATC for the 2007-2008 school year until your 2007-2008 FAFSA has been processed and the information has been received by the Financial Aid Office from the U.S. Department of Education.

You will not receive a tuition deferment or a book deferment until the MATC Financial Aid Office has received a valid EFC (Expected Family Contribution) from your processed 2007-2008 FAFSA and your financial aid has been awarded.  If you are eligible for a book deferment you will receive it from the bookstore.  If you have not been awarded financial aid, you will not be eligible for a book deferment, and you will need to pay for your books and supplies with cash or a credit card.

Register for classes. You must be admitted into an MATC  financial aid eligible degree program  before the admission application deadline in order to receive financial aid for the semester.  Registering for classes alone will not allow you to receive financial aid.  The following programs are not eligible to receive financial aid:  Nursing Assistant (unless admitted into the LPN or RN degree program), Adult High School, Basic Education classes, Apprenticeships, and Certificate programs (unless approved by the U.S. Department of Education).

You must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours, prior to the financial aid census date*, to be eligible to receive a loan.  In addition, in order for your loan to be processed, you must complete the online entrance counseling and an online master promissory note before the loan can be processed. *You can find the financial aid census date and other important dates by going to  http://matc.edu/student/resources/FinancialAid/impdates.html.

You will receive an MATC student e-mail informing you of the financial aid that you have been awarded. It is your responsibility to read all MATC student e-mails and information that you receive from the Financial Aid Office.  It is also your responsibility to update your postal mailing address, Internet e-mail address and contact phone number with the MATC Registration Department and the U.S. Department of Education.  The U.S. Department of Education will send most correspondence to you via e-mail.  It is extremely important to make sure all your information is always current with the MATC Registration Department and the U.S. Department of Education.

Submit all forms/documents requested by the MATC Financial Aid Office as soon as possible (so your financial aid will not be delayed).  This is especially important if your FAFSA was selected for verification.

Make copies of all forms that you submit to the MATC Financial Aid Office and keep them in a folder at home.  You should do this throughout your academic career.

You must complete a new FAFSA each academic year. If you are planning to attend classes in August, you will need to complete a new FAFSA starting the January before August, but no later than 12 weeks before the semester starts. Your financial aid package may change each academic year, depending on the financial aid resources available to the college and the income earned and assets incurred by you (and your parents if you are dependent student) as indicated on your Federal Tax Return and W2 from each job worked from the previous calendar year.

You may be required to pay back some and/or all of the financial aid that you were awarded once the MATC Financial Aid office learns that you received financial aid for:
- a class that you never attended
- a class that you withdrew from before the census date
- a class that you received a "U" (Unsatisfactory) grade in for never attending the class

Financial Aid Award Letter

Once your FAFSA application has been received and your financial aid has been processed you will receive an award letter from MATC's Financial Aid Office that includes information regarding all financial aid you are eligible to receive.

  • If you are a new student, you will receive a financial aid award letter in the U.S. mail.
  • If you are a returning MATC student, you will receive an e-mail notification instructing you to check your financial aid award on INFOnline at matc.edu.

How Financial Aid is Disbursed to Your MATC Student Account

At MATC your financial aid grants and scholarships will be disbursed to your student account starting the 3rd week of the semester. If you are a returning student at MATC and have been awarded a loan at MATC before, your loan will also be disbursed to your student account starting the 3rd week of the semester. If you are a new student at MATC, receiving a loan for the first time at MATC, your loan will be disbursed 30 days after the start of the semester. You must have completed your Entrance Loan Counseling and Master Promissory Note before any loan funds will be sent to MATC. You can access Entrance Loan Counseling and Master Promissory Note here.

Your financial aid will not be disbursed before classes start. We realize that having your books the first day of classes is vital to your academic success. You may be eligible to receive a book deferment if the MATC Financial Aid Office has received your FAFSA and your financial aid has been awarded for the semester. You are not eligible for a book deferment if your FAFSA has not been received and/or your financial aid has not been awarded for the semester. You can access the last date to purchase books on deferment by reviewing the Dates of Importance here.

It is for these reasons that it is important for you to complete your FAFSA application as early as possible to ensure that your financial aid has been awarded so that you can get a book deferment and purchase books for your first day of classes.

You can access the financial aid disbursement dates by reviewing the Dates of Importance here.

You can view the amount of financial aid that you were awarded by going to INFOnline here.

Are You Eligible to Receive a Financial Aid Refund?

Once your financial aid funds have been disbursed to your MATC student account, all charges that you have incurred at MATC will be deducted. These charges may include tuition, fees, book deferments, and other charges that you may have incurred. Any financial aid funds that are remaining after all of your charges have been paid, are processed into a financial aid refund check and mailed to the address that the MATC Registrar's office has on record for you.

If you are eligible to receive a financial aid refund check, the financial aid refund check will be mailed to you one (1) week after the financial aid has been disbursed to your MATC student account.

Tuition Deferment

If you are applying for Financial Aid after your tuition due date, you may need to apply for a Financial Aid tuition deferment. For information regarding the deferment, please access the Financial Aid Payment Option page here

The 150% Rule

When you receive Financial Aid, you are subject to the 150% Rule. This rule means that if you attempt more than 150% of the credit hours needed to graduate from your program of study, you will not continue to receive financial aid. If you exceed 150% in any one program, you will not be eligible to continue to receive financial aid. All of the credits that you have ever taken at MATC or transferred to MATC, whether financial aid was used or not, are counted in this 150% rule calculation. If you have changed programs of study, all credits that you have ever taken at MATC or transferred to MATC are counted, whether they can be counted towards the credits you need to complete your program of study or not.
You can access the 150% Rule form here.
