Apprenticeship Registration and Record

If you are a new apprentice, you do not have to apply for admission to MATC. Your admission to the college begins with our receipt of an approved copy of your apprentice indenture from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards, or the US Department of Labor ? Bureau of Apprenticeship Training.

After a copy of your apprentice indenture is received by MATC, you will be sent all the information you need to start the registration process. You will also receive information on when you will start classes, the days and times your classes will meet, and the course and book fees you will be required to pay.

All apprentices follow a set curriculum or course of study, and unless your employer requests a change or you qualify for advanced standing, you will be assigned to the standard first semester program.

If you are a continuing student in an apprentice program, you will register for classes in the preceding semester. You will receive your schedule and bill for school fees in the mail as soon as possible before the start of the next semester.

Payment of Fees
You are not considered to be officially enrolled and cannot attend classes until course fees have been paid. See the Tuition and Fees section of the MATC website for more information.

Withdrawal From Apprentice Classes
If your employer has canceled your apprenticeship, or you no longer wish to be enrolled in the apprentice program, you must officially drop the program by notifying the Apprentice Records office at the campus you attend and the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development ? Apprenticeship Division, or the U.S. Department of Labor. If you stop attending classes and fail to notify the appropriate offices, you will receive a failing grade for your courses.

Advanced Standing
You can be granted credit for knowledge you have acquired if it is equivalent to your MATC curriculum. The credit is counted in place of other MATC course requirements. ?Advanced standing? is the term used to describe your acceptance into a program with credit for prior knowledge.

Based on your pervious course work from another college, military training, another apprenticeship, course substitution, or course waiver, you may apply for advanced standing. Your employer may also request that it be granted. Apply for advanced standing through the Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards as soon as possible so that an appropriate program may be prepared.

Students admitted to a program at MATC (either associate degree or technical diploma) may request advanced standing based upon earned apprenticeship credits (500 level) or apprenticeship work experience. There is no fee for advanced standing by transferring of apprenticeship credits.

Evaluation of the apprenticeship credits may be done in one of two ways:
* The instructional division reviews the apprenticeship program in which the student participated and evaluates the related course work and work experience documentation provided by the Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards
* The apprentice may attempt a challenge exam to receive advanced standing credit

See the Transfer Credits to MATC section of this website for detailed information about the various types of advanced standing: Credit Transfer, Credit by Examination, Substitution, and Work Experience.

Transcript of Academic Records
Academic records are kept on permanent file in the Registration and Records office at the Milwaukee Campus. All requests for transcripts must be submitted in writing ? in person or by mail; telephone requests will not be honored. Your financial obligation to the college must be cleared before a transcript will be issued. See the Getting a Transcript section of this web site for information.

The apprentice authorizes the college to release progress, grades and attendance reports to the Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards and to the signatory to the agreement while the agreement is active. Respective employers and trade committees are exempt from this act.
