Associate in Applied Science Degree
School of Health Sciences

Downtown Milwaukee Campus
Program Code: 10-521-1

For Information: 414-297-6263
Downtown Milwaukee Campus, 414-297-MATC

Overview — Learn theoretical concepts and clinical applications of procedures used to diagnose and relieve the symptoms of various cardiac (heart-related) pathologies.

Applicants to the Cardiovascular Technology (CVT) program must specify either the invasive  CVT (Cardiac Catheterization Lab) or noninvasive CVT (Echocardiography) subspecialty. The program begins with one year of general CVT coursework, after which, each subspecialty will focus on its unique curriculum.

Hands-on instruction occurs in MATC's on-campus laboratories and Sim-labs, as well as in Catheterization (Cath) Labs and in Echocardiography departments of area hospitals. Clinical externships will include assignments in various local hospitals under the direction of an experienced CVT.

Successful completion of the program fulfills the necessary prerequisites to take the Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or the Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) as administered by Cardiac Credentialing International (CCI) or the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) exam as adminsitered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs accredited the invasive portion and echocardiography portion of this program in cooperation with the Joint Review Committee (JRC-CVT).

Career Pathway — You can earn the EKG Technician certificate on your way to completing this degree. Consult your advisor for information.

Career Outlook — The continuing demand for CVTs indicates exceptional employment possibilities. The projected growth is attributed to an increase in cardiovascular disease and the aging population. Opportunities include hospital departments and with experience, physicians’ offices and sales.

Program Learning Outcomes — Prospective employers will expect you to:

  • Exhibit patient care skills
  • Explain diagnostic procedures and provide support to patients
  • Work independently
  • Understand basic anatomy, physiology and operative procedures
  • Apply aseptic techniques in preparing and handling instruments
  • Work as a member of a healthcare team
