Student Accommodation Services

The Student Accommodation Services Department (SAS) ensures that students with disabilities receive equal access opportunities to all MATC programs, courses and services according to section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which protects students with disabilities from discrimination and assures full access to the college.

The Student Accommodation Services Department provides reasonable accommodations and academic support to students with disabilities who demonstrate specific educational needs. The goals of the department are:

  • To support educational progress
  • Promote completion of educational objectives
  • Ultimately expect individuals with disabilities to acquire and maintain competitive employment.

Under federal regulations, a student has a disability if he/she has:

  • A physical or mental disability that substantially limits one or more of his/her major life activities.
  • Has a record of impairment or is regarded as having impairment.

Students must express the need for an auxiliary aid or service and give adequate notice of the need to the Student Accommodation Services Department. MATC will then request that the student provide:

  • supporting diagnostic test results
  • relevant medical documents
  • professional prescriptions for auxiliary aids

There is no diagnostic testing provided by MATC; however, staff may assist students in locating qualified professionals in the Milwaukee area.

MATC is committed to offering a wide variety of services to meet the needs of students with disabilities. The Student Accommodation Services staff works closely with program counselors, faculty and other staff within the college to assist the student in addressing academic and program needs. MATC has discretion in choosing the specific aid or service it provides to a student, as long as the aid or service selected is effective. The student has the right to provide input regarding the type and effectiveness of specific accommodations as they relate to his/her disability.

Services and accommodations available through the Student Accommodations Learning Center that contribute to student success may include:

  • A Disability Specialist to provide one-on-one support
  • Adaptive/Assistive Technology
  • Assistance with course selection
  • CCTVs
  • Computers with enlarged text
  • Note-taking accommodations
  • Sign language interpreting
  • Tape recording of lectures
  • Test accommodations
  • Text conversion into alternate formats

Accommodations for students with disabilities at MATC vary with each student and an accommodation that works for one student may not work for another student with that same disability.

Students with a documented disability who need admissions testing accommodations should contact the college Transition Specialist 3 to 4 weeks prior to the testing date. Special classroom accommodations are all arranged through the Learning Center Coordinator.
