Academic Standing

Standards of Academic Progress

MATC's Standards of Academic Progress Policy requires program students to meet four standards to maintain Good Academic Standing. A student who fails to achieve any of these standards in any semester will be placed on Academic Warning. A student on Academic Warning that fails to meet any of the four standards will be placed on Academic Suspension.

  1. Term GPA of 2.0
  2. Cumulative GPA of 2.0
  3. Term completion rate of 67%
  4. Cumulative completion rate of 67%

Academic Standing

WARNING:  If you fail to meet the standards for Good Academic Standing listed above, you will be placed on Academic Warning. Although you are not restricted in the number of credits that you can take, you must achieve a minimum 67% semester completion rate of the credits you do take AND a minimum 2.0 semester GPA to avoid being placed on academic suspension.

You will return to Good Academic Standing when you meet all four criteria listed above.

SUSPENSION: If you are on Academic Warning and fail to meet the semester GPA of at least 2.0 and the semester course completion rate of at least 67%, you will be placed on Academic Suspension. You may file an Academic Appeal for Reinstatement to try and return to MATC. If you are a new student having just completed your first semester, please contact the Advising or Welcome Center at your campus for details and deadlines for the Appeal Process. If you are a continuing student, please contact a Retention Coach in your Academic & Career Pathway Office for assistance.

Once suspended, you may also be required to attend a college success workshop. These sessions help suspended students re-enter their degree or diploma program. The workshops provide tips on time management, study skills, stress management and overall strategies for college success.
If you are suspended from MATC, in order to be reinstated you must meet with your retention coach within your Academic Pathway. If you choose to sit out a semester, you will still need to meet with your Retention Coach to be reinstated for the following semester. You will remain on probation until you achieve good academic standing.  You must meet with your Retention Coach prior to the start of the semester in which you want to enroll.

PROBATION:  Upon successful appeal of your suspension status, you will be a be to return to classes at MATC, placed on Academic Probation and will be limited to a maximum of six advisor or coach-approved credits.  You must successfully achieve a 100% course completion rate and a minimum 2.0 GPA each semester to continue at MATC.  If you are not able to do this, you will be subject to Academic Suspension again.

If you are a reinstated student on probation who has lost financial aid eligibility, you must complete a minimum of six college-level credits at MATC before being reconsidered for financial aid.  You will return to Good Academic Standing when you meet both semester and cumulative requirements, as defined by the standards for Good Academic Standing listed above.
