During the 2008-2009 academic year, 25 MATC instructors used service-learning in their courses with 820 students completing over 7,000 hours of service. Participating departments included Business, Culinary Arts, Economics, English, English as a Second Language, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Pre-College Education, Psychology, Sociology, Teacher Education Preparation, Tool & Die Making, and Welding. More than 30 sections of MATC's College Success Course also incorporate Service-Learning into the curriculum every semester.
Service-Learning Team Accomplishments:
- Hosted two service-learning summits addressing engaged and service-learning pedagogy and best practices
- Spearheaded and coordinated an annual city-wide Walk Against Poverty with support from MATC and community organizations
- Taught multiple professional development courses and trainings for MATC faculty
- Presented on MATC's innovations in service-learning at local, regional and national conferences and events
Awards and Recognition:
- Dr. Courtney Marlaire won the 2008 Wisconsin Campus Compact Community-Based Learning Administrator Award for her outstanding efforts to support service-learning at MATC and the broader southeastern Wisconsin community.
- Danielle Rogers, an M3C Fellow, was honored as an MATC Student Ambassador for her commitment to the college and her community.
- Environmental Survival Summer Challenge was awarded the Governors Recognition Award for excellence in Service-Learning and Partnerships (spring 2009)
- SEWSLC received the 2009 Wisconsin DPI Award for collaborative efforts to support Service-Learning in southeastern Wisconsin.
- Named to the 2008 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
