Smart Option
MATC, UW-Madison Launch Badger Track

Milwaukee Area Technical College Liberal Arts and Sciences students who maintain a 3.0 grade point average and earn 54 prescribed credits are eligible for guaranteed admission to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “Badger Track” – the UW-Madison Transfer Contract Program – also guarantees special consideration for MATC students with GPAs of 2.6 to 2.99.  Signed in June, the agreement is effective for the fall 2006 semester.

Students participating in Badger Track must declare their intent to transfer to UW-Madison before they earn 30 credits, and must earn at least 54 credits in the MATC Liberal Arts and Sciences program. Expectations and outcomes for students are clearly spelled out. UW-Madison has similar pacts with Madison Area Technical College and Nicolet Area Technical College in Rhinelander, Wis. They and MATC are the only Wisconsin technical colleges that offer college transfer programs in addition to occupational training.

The new Badger Track transfer agreement is signed by Darnell E. Cole, MATC president, and John Wiley, UW-Madison chancellor.

“To say the least, we are thrilled with this new agreement,” said MATC President Darnell E. Cole. “Our students will have the opportunity to build a solid educational foundation at MATC and move on to one of the leading public universities in the world. We are renewing a historic partnership that goes back all the way to the 1930s.”

Removes Guesswork for Students

UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley emphasized that, for students, Badger Track clearly defines their transfer pathway. “MATC does an exceptional job of preparing students to transfer to UW-Madison,” Wiley said. “This new agreement provides detailed guidance for students so they know early in their enrollment what they need to do to establish the academic momentum that will assure their admission to UW-Madison. This takes all of the guesswork out of their planning.”

Students also will benefit by starting their UW-Madison degrees at any of MATC’s four convenient campuses. “It’s much more convenient to take classes close to home before moving to the Madison area or beginning a significant commute,” noted MATC Interim Provost Jim Walsh. “In addition, our tuition is relatively affordable. Convenience and tuition value should make Badger Track highly popular with our transfer student population.  Everyone wins with this new agreement.”

Leaders of both colleges emphasized that current MATC students who do not participate in Badger Track remain eligible to transfer to UW-Madison. If they haven’t completed 30 credits yet, they can sign up for Badger Track. Or, outside of Badger Track, they can still apply for admission to UW-Madison and submit proof of their accumulated MATC credits.
