MATC and the Marquette Interchange

Over the next three years, reconstruction of the Marquette Interchange will complicate access to the Downtown Milwaukee Campus. The project’s initial phase was completed in December 2004 with reopening of Clybourn Street and the 16th Street bridge over I-94. Things swung into high gear in April with demolition of major bridges and rerouting of southbound traffic in the heart of the interchange.

Bulletin: Wisconsin Avenue Bridge Closes

The Wisconsin Avenue bridge over I-43 is closed until November for for reconstruction. Westbound drivers can use State Street, Clybourn Street, St. Paul Avenue and Canal Street as alternates. Eastbound drivers can use Wells Street, Clybourn Street, St. Paul Avenue and Canal Street as alternates. By early June, Highland Avenue and Winnebago/Vliet Street will reopen to traffic in both directions as well.

Bulletin: All Remaining I-794 Connector Ramps Close

Oct. 28 marked the long-term closure of the system ramps from both directions of I-43 to eastbound I-794 and the closure of the Plankinton Avenue exit ramp from eastbound I-794. The southbound ramp to I-794 will be closed for three years. The northbound exit to Plankinton Avenue is slated to open by the end of 2006 with northbound access to the rest of eastbound I-794 opening in 2008.

This completes the long-term closure of all connections between I-794 and I-43. The two westbound ramps to I-43 were closed in September, along with the I-794 entrance ramp from 2nd Street. All will remain closed for the duration of the project.

Meanwhile, traffic has returned to the southbound lanes of I-43 between North Avenue and Wells Street for the first time since April. The return of traffic to the two new southbound lanes will include the opening of a new exit ramp to Highland Avenue. As part of the next phase of the project in November, northbound I-43 traffic between Walnut Street and Highland Avenue will be switched over to two other lanes of the new southbound I-43 pavement.

Also opened were new temporary lanes for eastbound I-94 between 16th Street and the Milwaukee River, a new temporary ramp from eastbound I-94 to northbound I-43, a new temporary exit ramp from eastbound I-794 to James Lovell Street and a new exit ramp from westbound I-94 to 25th Street. The new ramp replaces the old 22nd Street exit.
