Gingerbread Creations Made by MATC Baking & Pastry Arts Students on Display at Milwaukee Public Market Dec. 2-13
Updated Dec. 2, 2017
Milwaukee Area Technical College’s annual gingerbread house competition and public display includes a new twist this year. In addition to 25 elaborate traditional gingerbread house entries, there are three replicas of the new Milwaukee Bucks arena and three of the Milwaukee Brewers’ Miller Park stadium as part of a new “Gingerbread Pro” partnership. All entries were created by MATC’s baking and pastry arts associate degree and baking production diploma program students. They will be on display from Saturday, Dec. 2, through Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the Milwaukee Public Market, 400 N. Water St.
The public is encouraged to view and bid on the creations. Proceeds from silent auctions for each entry will be used to offer scholarships to students in baking programs through the MATC Foundation, Inc.
Baking industry professionals judges all entries for design and quality. Representatives of the Milwaukee Bucks, Milwaukee Brewers and Eppstein Uhen Architects President Rich Tennessen, whose firm is the lead local architect for both Miller Park and the new Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center, also weighed in on judging the replicas of their structures. The Brewers Community Foundation and the Milwaukee Bucks have donated funds to the MATC Foundation’s scholarship program as part of this new partnership.
Visitors are invited to vote for the “people’s choice” scholarship winner in the traditional gingerbread house competition and also in the Gingerbread Pro competition. A reception for contestants and their families will begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec.13, at the Milwaukee Public Market; awards will be announced at 6:30 p.m. Results of the silent auctions also will be announced at the ceremony. Auction winners may take the houses with them that evening. The Wisconsin Bakers Association provides $1,500 in prizes and certificates for the winners.
The market is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call Cheryl Miranda at (414) 297-6972.
