MATC and AAA Partnered on Safe Driving Campaign:
Students Encouraged to Avoid Distractions Behind the Wheel that Could Jeopardize Their Goals

Milwaukee Area Technical College teamed up with AAA Wisconsin and the Auto Club Group Traffic Safety Foundation to discourage distracted driving by students. Events were held at each of MATC’s campuses throughout October.
"We were pleased to partner with AAA Wisconsin and the Auto Club Group Traffic Safety Foundation to highlight the dangers of distracted driving," said Archie Graham, MATC director of student life. "It is important that people realize how easily a simple action like reading a text or checking the internet while driving could have tragic consequences."
At each campus, students had the opportunity to experience the effects of distractions during a virtual drive on the AAA/ACGFTS simulators. They also had the opportunity to win a $50 gas card by writing down a personal goal which might not be realized if they were in a distracted driving crash, and then posting a “safety selfie” on social media using the tag #MATCisFocused.
A recent study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that drivers ages 19-39 are significantly more likely to use their phones behind the wheel than any other age group. Forty-three percent report typing text messages or emails, compared with fewer than 30% for any other age group. In addition, more than a quarter of drivers in this group report using the internet behind the wheel, compared to fewer than 17% for other groups.
“Distracted driving is dangerous driving,” said Victoria Hanson, regional president for AAA Wisconsin. “It is critical for young adults – who will be setting the example for the next generation of drivers – to recognize the risks and develop safe habits behind the wheel.”
Representatives from AAA worked with MATC’s Office of Student Life and MATC’s student government on this campaign.
