Sybrina Fulton, Mother of Trayvon Martin, Spoke at 22nd Annual MATC Soul Food Celebration March 14

March 19, 2014

Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin, was the keynote speaker March 14 at t the 22nd annual Soul Food Celebration, sponsored by Milwaukee Area Technical College’s Black Student Union and Office of Student Life. Part of MATC’s Black History Month celebration, Fulton presented “Empowering Our Youth.”  The event began with a reception at 5:30 p.m  and the program/dinner began at 6:30 p.m. at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Proceeds from the event benefited MATC’s Black Student Union.

Martin died during a violent confrontation in Florida with neighborhood watch coordinator George Zimmerman in 2012. The publicity surrounding the Zimmerman shooting trial sparked national debate. Since her son’s death, Fulton has dedicated her life to bringing about social change. She speaks against violence toward children, and advocates for safer communities and educating children about civil rights and acceptance.

Fulton met with MATC students and staff for a roundtable discussion at the college in the late afternoon before the benefit.
