Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in Renovated Pre-College Food Labs Held

Milwaukee Area Technical College hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony in its School of Pre-College Education Food Labs February 19. MATC President Dr. Michael L. Burke, Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Vicki J. Martin, School of Pre-College Education Dean Gloria Pitchford-Nicholas and chef/instructor Paul Carrier shared remarks with the crowd that exceeded 50 .

The renovated, state-of-the-art classroom and labs are located in Rom C236 on the Downtown Milwaukee Campus. Samples of pizza, chili, soup, bread and desserts prepared by Pre-College Education culinary students were shared with attendees.

This classroom served as a home economics lab when the C Building opened in the 1960s. The renovation was designed with the thought of transitioning students to MATC’s culinary arts associate degree program, according to Carrier. Now there are five stations with commercial grade equipment and students become acclimated to a restaurant line style of learning. The food service and hospitality industry is among the fastest-growing sectors in southeastern Wisconsin and the nation.
