Oak Creek, Wis. (Sept. 13, 2012) – The 14th annual Milwaukee Empty Bowls fundraiser for the hungry will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Milwaukee Area Technical College's Oak Creek Campus, 6665 S. Howell Ave.
Guests may choose from more than 2,000 ceramic bowls handcrafted and donated by local artists, teachers and students. Soups prepared by more than 50 local chefs are served with bread and other refreshments. Area musicians will entertain event attendees. Registration is not required, but a minimum donation of $20 per bowl ($10 for bowls made by children) is requested. The bowls the guests take home serve as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in our community.
"Our annual event educates the public about hunger in our community and raises funds to support the organizations that work to alleviate that hunger," said Jean Wells, founder and president of Milwaukee Empty Bowls. "This event is a unique partnership between local artists, restaurants, entertainers and the people who come to enjoy it."
Last year, 1,800 people were served and $42,825 was raised in support of local food programs.
Since 1999, Milwaukee Empty Bowls has donated more than $410,000 to food programs in metropolitan Milwaukee and more than 24,000 bowls have been purchased. More than 95 percent of the funds raised go directly to aid the hungry in the Milwaukee community. Each year, the event is held on or around World Food Day.
Milwaukee Empty Bowls will also debut its first MEB Cookbook, featuring stories, color photos and 65 soup recipes from local restaurants that have donated soup over the years. The cookbook will be available for a $20 donation at the event or online for $25, including shipping.
Proceeds from this year's event will go to: Agape Community Center, The Cathedral Center, Fondy Food Center, Friedens Community Ministries, Interchange, Jewish Community Food Pantry, Milwaukee Christian Center and St. Catherine's Food Pantry.
