President Obama Announces American Graduation Initiative
(July 17, 2009) – President Barack Obama outlined the American Graduation Initiative that will empower community colleges to respond to rapid technological change and global competition.
“Today, I am announcing the most significant down payment yet on reaching this goal in the next ten years,” said President Obama in a speech at Macomb Community College in Warren, Mich. “It’s called the American Graduation Initiative. It will reform and strengthen community colleges from coast to coast so that they get the resources students and schools need – and the results workers and businesses demand. Through this plan, we seek to help an additional five million Americans earn degrees and certificates in the next decade.”

“President Obama has recognized the important role community and technical colleges will play in our nation’s economic recovery,” said MATC Interim President Dr. Vicki Martin. “The American Graduation Initiative is an important step in rebuilding the capacity and competitiveness of America’s workforce. Milwaukee Area Technical College is committed to providing the education and training critical to helping the region maintain its manufacturing base and develop jobs of the future in technology, information and green industries. MATC is poised to prepare workers for jobs of the future and help the nation and our community thrive and compete in a global economy.”
Wisconsin Technical College System President Dan Clancy commented, "The American Graduation Initiative is a bold and timely investment, which will help Wisconsin and it deserves our support. The WTCS will work with the Administration and Congress as the Initiative advances through the legislative process. With the new federal investments proposed by President Obama, Wisconsin’s Technical Colleges will develop more options for students to pursue degrees and certificates online and to accelerate their academic achievement in programs that combine occupational learning and skills development. We will build upon our strong partnerships with Wisconsin business, labor and employers to further improve the alignment between technical college curricula and workplace needs."
