Wisconsin First Lady Jessica Doyle Visits MATC to Promote Wisconsin Covenant

Wisconsin First Lady Jessica Doyle visited Milwaukee Area Technical College's Downtown Milwaukee campus April 23, 2009, as a part of Wisconsin Covenant Days activities. First Lady Doyle met with 150 local 8th graders from Mitchell Street, Thoreau, Hopkins and Holmes schools and shared the importance of establishing a solid educational foundation.

"When you do right for yourself, you do right for the State of Wisconsin," said the First Lady. "Eighth grade is a time when you determine your future. We are counting on you to make the most of your education and the entire state is cheering you on." Mrs. Doyle also recognized MATC's 200+ programs and commented, "MATC is a tremendous gem for Milwaukee and the State of Wisconsin."

Dr. Vicki Martin, MATC's interim president welcomed the 8th graders to the Downtown Milwaukee campus and encouraged them to sign the Wisconsin Covenant. "When you sign the covenant, you are not making the promise by yourself. Your teachers, your families, and your community will support you in your pursuit of educational excellence."

Additional speakers included Wayne Larrivee, voice of the Green Bay Packers, and Laura Arbuckle, human resources director at Potawatomi Bingo Casino.

Wisconsin Covenant Days give 8th graders across the state an opportunity to experience life on a college campus. The Wisconsin Covenant is a program created in 2006 by Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle that inspires young people to plan early for a successful high school career that will lead to higher education. Students who fulfill the Wisconsin Covenant Pledge are recognized as Wisconsin Covenant Scholars and earn a spot at a Wisconsin university, college or technical college. Students also can expect a financial aid package based on their family's financial need.

The students visiting MATC toured the campus, met with faculty and students, and participated in program explorations.
