Lock Down Drills

The Public Safety Department will be conducting daytime and evening lock down drills at all four campuses on the following dates:

Mequon Campus - Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

West Allis Campus - Tuesday, September 25, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Downtown Milwaukee Campus - Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. & 6:00 p.m.(includes HEC)

Oak Creek Campus - Monday, September 23, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The purpose of these drills is to reinforce and practice MATC's lock down procedures.

A lock down is a form of evacuation that controls or limits movement on campus. Lock downs are most commonly associated with an "active shooter" situation, but they can also be used in other emergency situations on or around the campus.

Drills should take no more than 15-20 minutes per building/campus.  When a lock down announcement is made over the mass notification system, we ask that faculty, staff and students follow these procedures:

  1. Stay in your current location or take refuge in the nearest safe location.
  2. If it is safe to do, gather anyone stranded in the corridors into your classroom or office.
  3. Lock, secure or barricade doors and windows.
  4. Turn off lights, computer monitors, silence cell phones, etc.
  5. Assist others, as appropriate.
  6. Get out of sight, away from doors/windows or behind/under furniture.
  7. Remain calm and quiet.
  8. After the door has been closed and locked, DO NOT open it.
  9. Monitor campus communication systems for further information or instructions.
  10. Stay in your safe place until the all clear announcement has been given, or your current location becomes unsafe.

Additional Lock Down Safety Tips:

  • Plan ahead by discussing procedures with students, faculty and staff before a drill or emergency. You can also attend a lock down workshop that will be offered prior to the drills.
  • Whenever possible, keep doors in a locked position.  Prop doors open for access, so they can be quickly closed in the event of an emergency.
  • Public Safety, Student Accommodations and Human Resources are available to help with creating personal plans for anyone who may need additional assistance during a campus evacuation.
  • During drills, we practice "locking down" which is a way to hide and barricade yourself in  safety.  In an actual emergency, students, faculty and staff will have to decide what is the best option given the circumstances.  Other options include, running to escape the building or defending yourself. Please review the new District Emergency Procedures Guide for procedures for more information.
